Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street (Deluxe Edition)

Exile is held up to be the Stones masterpiece, but I’ve always found it to be a overly raw and somewhat bloated collection. At it’s core are some fantastic songs (Happy; Tumbling Dice; Sweet Virginia) but the half finished throwaways that would typically end up on the cutting room floor drag the set down. Trimmed to a single lp it would have been a much tighter record and deserved the masterpiece tagging – as it is, the lp’s that proceeded it and followed it (Sticky Fingers; Goats Head Soup) are both better records. I enjoyed the outtakes record quite a bit as it is more blues oriented and Mick Taylor’s guitars shine through in the mixes – unlike the regular lp where his guitar playing for the most part is indistinguishable. Rating: ***1/2
