THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
CINDERELLA...Night Songs (1986)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

The debut album from Cinderella reached number 3 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. I can remember one day in 1986 I had been watching some videos on MTV and on this particular day they had played several recent metal videos. Later on I walked into a record store and this album had been released the day before and was featured prominently in front of the store. I had never heard of them or any of their songs but I bought it anyway. It's an 80's "hair" metal record, nothing more, nothing less. It won't blow your socks off but you won't be bored, either. I recommend it if you've never heard it, it's a pretty cool album. The highlights are the 3 popular tracks, "Somebody Save Me", "Shake Me" and "Nobody's Fool."

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
GEORGE HARRISON...33 1/3 (1976)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

This album reached number 11 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. After yesterdays horrific AOTD I had to pick something that I knew I loved. This is my second favorite album of all time. 33 1/3 has 10 fantastic pop tracks, ranging from rock ("Woman Don't You Cry For Me"), ballads ("Learning How To Love You"), humor ("Crackerbox Palace"), spirituality ("Dear One"), a tribute to Smokey Robinson ("Pure Smokey"), a great cover ("True Love") and catchy little tunes ("This Song"). What I'm trying to say is it has everything you would want from a good pop album. If you're only interested in hard rock this album is not for you. if you just like good crafted and catchy songs this one is highly recommended from one of our greatest artist of all time

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
TRAVIS BARKER...Give The Drummer Some (2011)
(CD, clean version, Allmusic review)

This is a rock/rap album that debuted at number 9 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. Travis Barker is the drummer for Blink 182. Two things are wrong with this album. First, it's more of a rap album than a rock album with guest appearances from several major rap artist. Second, I hate how some artist think they need to use foul language in music. Just a dreadful album. Definitely not what I thought it was when I chose it to be the AOTD. Not recommended

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
CHICKENFOOT...Chickenfoot (2009)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

This record reached number 4 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. Whenever a group of guys from other bands and/or solo artist join those guys people like to call them a supergroup. I don't look at it like that. i think bands like Black Country Communion, Them Crooked Vultures and Chickenfoot are super simply because of their music. This particular album is absolutely fantastic. Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani and Chad Smith are just a bunch of guys in a band that ROCK!!! This album is highly recommended. Check out "Oh Yeah," "My Kinda Girl" and "Soap On A Rope."

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
RISE AGAINST...Endgame (2011)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

Endgame debuted at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard album charts this past week. It's a pretty cool album, it actually surprised me. It rocks, and the band has a lot to say about the condition of the world. It's not an album that will blow you away or anything like that, but it was an interesting listen. I guess if you have to put a genre label on them it would be alternative/punk/hard rock. I recommend it. Highlights for me were "Make it Stop (September's Children)," "Architects" and "Help Is On The Way".

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
KISS...Rock And Roll Over (1976)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)
This album reached number 11 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. This is another great album that should have made it higher in the charts. For me this record is better now than when I was a kid. I can't explain it, really, but perhaps it's because now I've actually sat down and listened to it as an adult rather than as a teenager who just wanted to play my tennis racket like a guitar with bands like Kiss. Folks, this album just flat our rocks with no studio gimmicks, not much overlays and with Eddie Kramer as the producer. "Baby Driver" could be the best song Peter Criss ever did both as a member of Kiss and as a solo artist. Other highlights "Makin' Love" and "Mr. Speed". I give it a 5 out of 5 stars, so highly recommended.

9. "I'm a Man" (Steve Winwood/James Miller) – 7:43
Side four
10. "Prologue" (James William Guercio) – 0:58
11. "Someday" (James Pankow/Robert Lamm) – 4:11
12. "Liberation" (James Pankow) – 14:38

This is the debut record by Chicago – or as they were known at the time – the Chicago Transit Authority. (sometimes informally referred to simply as "CTA"). It is a double album which is rare for a debut release. By today’s standards the material would fit nicely on 1 CD – but a debut record with enough material to fill out a double-disc affair is just unheard of these days. In fact seeing as the band had no track record, their label – Columbia, only agreed to the double lp if the group would take a royalty cut.

I am of course familiar with Chicago and their ‘hits’, but past that I have not heard anything by them. This is an interesting record that actually sounds like it could have been made by two entirely different bands.

On the one hand there is a rock & roll quartet pounding out heavy guitar wailing rock and roll, and then there is the brass trio that augment the pop tracks with as jazz fusion rock. The rock tracks were a surprise as this is not what you think of when you think of Chicago. Perhaps that is why I enjoyed the material from this record that scored in the singles charts the most. Songs such as "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?," "Beginnings," "Questions 67 and 68," and the only cover on the project, Steve Winwood's "I'm a Man", it’s what feels right and comfortable for Chicago. Special mention goes out to “Poem 58” which has an exceptional lead guitar solo.

The record is not without it’s faults however. The 15-plus minute free for all "Liberation" and the meandering experimental avant-garde "Free Form Guitar" – which is exactly as the title suggests, left a lot to be desired.

Upon it’s release the record became an immediate hit, reaching #17 in the US and #9 in the UK. Oddly, the songs from the record that were released as singles initially failed to produce any hits. It wasn’t until the success of some of their later albums later in 1970 and 1971, did they prove to be hits! The album itself stayed on the charts for a then-record 171 weeks, and was certified gold , and has since gone double platinum. It is the only record by Chicago on the 1001 list.
It is recommended.

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
BOSTON...Boston (1976)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

It's hard to believe that such a huge selling classic as this debut from Boston only reached number 3 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. I helped this album sell so many copies. I bought the 8-track so I could jam to it in my car. Then, when I got a cassette player, I replaced the old 8-track with a cassette. Then, sometime during the 80's I bought the LP along with their second album Don't Look Back on the same day. Then, in 1997, I bought the minidisc of it. Ironically, I've never bought the CD. There are maybe around 60 or 70 albums out there where I think all of the tracks are outstanding. That may sound like a lot, but I've listened to thousands of albums, so that's actually a pretty low number. This is one of those 60 or 70. It is superb rock n roll, great vocals from Brad Delp, great songs...it's just great. Highly, and I do mean highly, recommended. Highlights for me are "Foreplay/Long Time, "Peace Of Mind" and "Smokin'".

DROPKICK MURPHYS...Going Out In Style (2011)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

This album reached number 6 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. This is their 7th album and the first I have ever heard by them. They are described as Celtic punk. I thought "What the heck is Celtic punk?" Turns out it basically is alternative/punk rock with bagpipes included. This was interesting, not great or anything like that. The highlights for me were "Cruel", "Broken Hymns" and "1953". A bonus on the record is that Bruce Springsteen makes a vocal appearance on "Peg O' My Heart." If you like checking out new kinds of music check it out, if not skip this one

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
BOB SEGER AND THE SILVER BULLET BAND...Live Bullet (1976)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

This album reached number 34 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. Released in 1976 it wasn't until the late 80's that I ever heard the album, and it was by accident. I was DJing a party and someone asked for "Turn The Page" by Bob Seger. I told the guy I don't have it. He said I'll go get my cassette. So once I got the cassette at the right spot and played it everyone slow danced to it AND they were singing along. I was amazed at how popular this was yet I, being one who kept up with all things rock n roll, had never heard of it. Once the song was over I took the cassette out to see the name of the album. It was Live Bullet. Wait a minute, I have this at home. My brother had given it to me and I had never played it, so I took it out and enjoyed it, all 4 sides. I recommend you check it out.

GEORGE HARRISON...The Best Of George Harrison (1976)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

This compilation reached number 31 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. It would have sold better had some things been different. One: had George himself been involved in the making of the album. Two: George hated the cover that was used on the American Capitol records issue (seen here). Three: The record needed to be all George solo tracks. Instead, side one are tracks George did as a Beatle, side 2 are his solo hits. Don't get me wrong...the music here is superb, but much better Harrison compilations are available that were released years later. I do recommend this release as it is quite entertaining

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
TRENT REZNOR/ATTICUS ROSS...The Social Network (2010)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

This soundtrack album reached number 20 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. Reznor and Ross won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for The Social Network. Trent you all know as the frontman for Nine Inch Nail. Atticus Ross is from England, and he's a composer and a producer and was involved with 4 Nine Inch Nails albums. If you watched the movie "The Book Of Eli" then you've heard his music, as he composed the music for the film. So, because of Reznor's involvement, the Academy Award and plus because the album has jumped in the charts recently I decided to check it out. The record has been receiving praise everywhere, just read the Allmusic review. It's not a rock n roll album so if you're hoping to hear some NIN type music here you should pass. If you're open to new sounds and give all kinds of music a chance than I recommend you check this one out. While it's not my cup of tea I did find myself interested and ready to see how the album would flow together. It was a cool listen

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
BLUE OYSTER CULT...Blue Oyster Cult (1972)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

This debut from BOC reached number 172 on the U.S. Billboard album chart. Have you noticed that many of the debut albums we've checked out here lately didn't actually do that well? Nowadays, if a band doesn't come out of the gate swinging they may not have much of a chance at the big time. Back in the 70's some of the most popular rock bands didn't get a hit album until their 3rd, 4th or even 5th album. If you're a fan of the 70's hard rock scene check this one out. It had been awhile since I had heard this album (I used to own a cassette copy of it) and it was actually better than I remembered. 7 of the 10 songs I remembered "Hey, I like this one." "Transmaniacon MC", "I'm on the Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep" and "Stairway to the Stars" were some of the highlights for me. Recommended

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
AARON LEWIS...Town Line (2011)
(CD, Allmusic review)

This debut album from Aaron Lewis, the lead singer from Staind, entered the Billboard album charts this week at number 7. My kids really like the video of "Country Boy" so i thought I'd check it out. It's a country sounding album, as Lewis is a big fan of country music. Being a rock fan I was hoping for a heavy punch from Aaron on his debut. Nevertheless, it's still pretty cool for an EP, plus it has 3 different versions of "Country Boy". I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars, and recommend you check it out

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
LED ZEPPELIN...The Song Remains The Same (1976)
(CD, vinyl, DVD, blu-ray, Allmusic review)

This live 2 album set made it to number 2 on the U.S. Billboard album charts, and it was the first Zep album I ever bought. I have enjoyed it ever since, especially now that the remastered version with extra tracks came out. Zeppelin was a fabulous band live. This record has a 29 minute version of "Dazed And Confused" which covers all of side 2. Also a great track on here is "No Quarter". Of course the biggies "Stairway To Heaven" and "Whole Lotta Love" are included. Highly recommended, as all Zep albums are

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
THE BLACK CROWES...$hake Your Money Maker (1990)
(CD, Vinyl, Allmusic review)

The debut release from the Black Crowes reached number 4 on the Billboard album charts, and what a debut it is. By far their most successful and popular album, it's also my favorite by the band. Not to take anything away from their other releases, as they are good, as well, but this record is the bomb! The bluesy, Rolling Stones influenced riffs and vocals are impressive, cool hard rock, but not metal. "Hard To Handle" is for sure the best track, definitely will get any crowd on their feet with fist in the air. Other highlights include "Struttin' Blues" and "Jealous Again". Definitely a gem in my collection so I recommend it for you

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
JEFF BECK...Rock 'N' Roll Party: Honoring Les Paul
(2 CD, DVD, blu-ray, Allmusic review)

Rock 'n' Roll Party (Honouring Les Paul) entered the U.S. Billboard album chart this week at number 54. When I saw this on the New Release list several weeks ago I knew this would eventually be an Album Of The Day. Les Paul is the reason we have rock 'n' roll and Jeff Beck, along with thousands of other guitarist that we all listen to, know this. So, on the anniversary of Les Paul's death Beck performed this concert at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City. This was a delight to listen to. It's not only rock 'n' roll that is presented here, as Paul was mainly a jazz and country guitarist. There's rockabilly, some oldies, some jazz and some standards. Les Paul's influence was all over the industry as can be heard on this album. Brian Setzer joins in on a great version of "Twenty Flight Rock", Trombone Shorty joins in on a fabulous version of "Peter Gunn" and Gary U.S. Bonds rocked the place with "New Orleans". Imelda May sings the majority of the rest of the album and does a great job. I liked it, I played it 4 times back to back yesterday. I think you'll like it, too

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
BILLY SQUIER...The Tale Of The Tape (1980)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

Have you ever heard this album? Have you even heard of this album? It reached number 169 on the U.S. Billboard charts so I would bet you most likely have not. I had not ever heard of it, either, but with continuing with the debut release approach I thought I would check out Billy's, and this is it. It's actually his solo debut, as he had been in a band called Piper who had the same manager as Kiss. Speaking of Kiss, a future member, Bruce Kulick, plays guitar on the record and co-wrote the track "Rich Kid." As for the album...it's cool, it was interesting as I had never heard it before, but Squier's best was still to come. The same formula is here as it is in the future releases: hard rock, guitar hooks, loud vocals and catchy chorus's. The songs just aren't as good as they soon would be. However, I do recommend you give it a listen as it is history, it's probably new to you and you can see where Billy started on his own. It gets a thumbs up from me

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die #161. Tim Buckley - Happy Sad (1969)

161. Sly Tim Buckley - Happy Sad (1969)

Label – Elektra
Producer – Zal Yanovsky and Jerry Yester
Art Direction – William S. Harvey
Nationality – USA
Running Time – 44:43

Track Listing (standout tracks listed in bold)

1. Strange Feeling
2. Buzzin' Fly
3. Love From Room 109 At The Islander
4. Dream Letter
5. Gypsy Woman
6. Sing A Song For You

“Happy Sad” is the third album by singer-songwriter Tim Buckley and the second on in the 1001 list. It is a very low key, quiet record. It has almost an Unplugged feeling about it. I didn’t like this record as much as I did the previous on (“Goodbye And Hello”) but it’s also a different type of record. This is more of a mellow almost jazzy Tim Buckley that reminded me more of Fred Neil then it did Tim’s other works.
There are only 6 tracks, but several are really lengthy and that’s the appeal of some of the tracks. They are acoustic based, intense, complex songs that build up over the course of the tracks. Sparse minimal production – one could say UNDER production by Zal Yanovsky and Jerry Yester adds to the intoxicating mood. The tracks just suck you in.
“Happy Sad” was released at the height of his popularity, and was therefore his highest charting album, reaching #81 in the US Pop albums chart.
It is recommended.
