 THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD...Last Time Around  (1968)
Last Time Around is the third and final album from Buffalo Springfield, released 45 years ago in 1968, and it reached number 42 on the U.S. Billboard album charts.  Another album I had never heard before.  I had always heard that this album wasn't really all that good, but I found it to be pretty good, good enough for a 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.  "The Hour Of Not Quite Rain" was by far the best track with its orchestral arrangement.  Another strong highlight is "Pretty Girl Why" and "Kind Woman," the final track on the record.  I've always thought of Buffalo Springfield as having paved the path for bands like the Eagles with their country-folk-rock sounds.  Of course the Eagles would produce much better albums than this one, but it's worth checking out and I recommend it.

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
BOB SEGER AND THE SILVER BULLET BAND...Live Bullet (1976)

This album reached number 34 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. Released in 1976 it wasn't until the late 80's that I ever heard the album, and it was by accident. I was DJing a party and someone asked for "Turn The Page" by Bob Seger. I told the guy I don't have it. He said I'll go get my cassette. So once I got the cassette at the right spot and played it everyone slow danced to it AND they were singing along. I was amazed at how popular this was yet I, being one who kept up with all things rock n roll, had never heard of it. Once the song was over I took the cassette out to see the name of the album. It was Live Bullet. Wait a minute, I have this at home. My brother had given it to me and I had never played it, so I took it out and enjoyed it, all 4 sides. I recommend you check it out.

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
SOCIAL DISTORTION...Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes (2011)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

Social Distortion has been around for a long time but I have never really paid much attention to them. So I decided that since they just recently released this album I would check it out. I got my copy, put it on and was quite surprised. They're a good little rock n' roll band, just writing some catchy tunes and delivering them with a in-your-face sound. They're not a metal band, but they're harder than, say, the Stones. I guess a similar band would be the Dead Kennedys. Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes starts off with a blistering instrumental "Road Zombie", and I also liked "California (Hustle And Flow)" and "Machine Gun Blues". This record is not going to blow you away but it is fun and I'm certainly glad I listened to it and now I can say "Yes, I like Social Distortion". Check it out, I recommend it.

“Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake” was a concept album by the English rock band Small Faces. Coming after the success of "Itchycoo Park" this album was a mix of all the popular albums being released at the time. It’s a variety show, it’s a storytellers album and it’s a actor/performer piece. The Small Faces tried a little bit of all of these approaches on this record. Side one's material would not have been out of place on any other Small Faces release, and it is top notch. "Afterglow (Of Your Love)", "Rene", "Song of a Baker." and "Lazy Sunday," are all guitar crunching bass and drum pounding anthems the Small Faces were known for. Side two – the story side - is more elaborate, with overdubbed harps and light orchestration here and there, all linked by a narration about a character called "Happiness Stan." The core of the sound is still the pounding beats on tracks like "Rollin' Over".
This was a very enjoyable album to listen to and it’s not surprising that the record went to number one spot on the U.K. charts for six weeks in 1968. Although the core of the group would go on to greater success as simply the Faces – this was the Small Faces crowning achievement. The album was originally released on vinyl in a circular novelty package of a metal replica of a giant tobacco tin inside which was a poster created with 6 connected paper circles with pictures of the band members. The title and the design of the distinctive packaging was a parody of Ogdens' Nut-brown Flake, a brand of tobacco which was produced in Liverpool from 1899. In 2000 Q magazine placed Ogden's Nut Gone Flake at number 59 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever
