THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
JEFFERSON AIRPLANE...Thirty Seconds Over Winterland  (1973)
Thirty Seconds Over Winterland was released 40 years ago in April 1973.  It reached number 52 on the U.S. Billboard album charts.  This is a live album recorded in 1972.  I recommend it with a 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.  I have never really got into Airplane.  They always sound like they can't sing in harmony and this album is no different.  However, the lack of good vocals doesn't take away from their playing.  They can jam!  Just check out the 11 minute "Feels So Good."  It's a great track.  But then check out "When The Earth Moves Again."  Man, they sound terrible. I thought "Trial By Fire" was a good track with some cool guitar. To sum it all up, this album would rock if it were all instrumental

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
DAVID GILMOUR...David Gilmour  (1978)
David Gilmour was released 35 years ago in 1978.  It reached number 29 on the U.S. Billboard album charts.  I will give it a 3 1/2 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it.  The only reason people are not familiar with the music on this album is because it's not on a Pink Floyd album.  That's not to say it sounds like a Pink Floyd album but there are some similarities, of course.  That guitar playing from Gilmour is familiar, and may I add he is a very underrated guitarist.  There's also those familiar vocals, as Gilmour is an excellent vocalist (check out "I Can't Breathe Anymore").  Those 2 things combined with some excellent songs make for a great record.  "So Far Away" is the highlight for me, along with "There's No Way Out Of Here." "It's Deafinitely" is a great instrumental as well as the opener "Mihalis."  All Pink Floyd fans should check this out as it is a very nice solo effort from David Gilmour

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE...Temper, Temper  (2013)
Temper, Temper is the latest album from Bullet For My Valentine and is currently at number 13 on the U.S. Billboard album charts.  This is a in-your-face hardcore heavy metal.  It is loud, it is raunchy, it rocks and I liked it much more than I thought I would.  I'll give it a 2 1/2 out of 5 stars and recommend it.  It's nothing groundbreaking whatsoever, it's just a rockin' album to have a good time to, definitely something for twenty-something year olds.  No tracks really stand to me as highlights, however the most interesting track is their cover of the AC/DC classic "Whole Lotta Rosie".

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
AEROSMITH...Aerosmith (1973)
(CD, Allmusic review)

Another debut, in this case Aerosmith, which hit number 21 on the U.S. Billboard chart. For today I wanted to have a debut by a well known band that I personally had never heard so I started with the A's and I could not believe that the second band I looked at I had never heard their entire debut, and Aerosmith of all bands. I am so familiar with nearly all of their albums but yet this one somehow had escaped me. Imagine my delight as I got to hear some new tracks from Aerosmith that were released 38 years ago. It was a nice listen, I enjoyed it, a lot. Their influences are all over the place on this record: Beatles, Zep, Stones. Of course, we've all heard their classic "Dream On", most of you will know "Mama Kin" (great jam), and I also enjoyed "Walkin' The Dog" (originally by Rufus Thomas). I do have one complaint...the album cover just strikes me wrong, I don't know why, just looks terrible. Other than that I recommend you go to a brick and mortar record store today, buy it, and enjoy

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
GUNS 'N' ROSES...Greatest Hits (2004)
(CD, Allmusic review)

As I was listening to this I actually became sad. Don't get me wrong...the sounds coming out of the CD were still rocking, after all these years. The sadness came from realizing that this band has (or had) the potential to be one of the greatest bands ever. In this package, which reached number 3 on the U.S. Billboard charts, has all the proof you need. Great musicianship, great vocals, and great songs. But they have egos and personalities that spoiled everything. All the biggies from GNR are here, and that includes 5 covers: "Knockin' On Heavens Door" (Bob Dylan), "Live And Let Die" (Paul McCartney and Wings), "Ain't It Fun" (The Dead Boys), "Since I Don't Have You" (The Skyliners) and "Sympathy For The Devil" (The Rolling Stones). This is a good compilation so check it out, it's recommended.

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
THE WHO...The Who Sings My Generation (1965)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)

The first album from the Who, released in 1965 in the U.K., in the U.S. in 1966. It didn't even chart in the U.S. Billboard chart, and my question is WHY NOT?!!! There has been a deluxe edition CD released which is a 2 disc collection of the album, current singles, different versions, etc. I reviewed the original American release (as the track listing does differ some from the UK version). I've never payed much attention to this record but now I wish I had. It's was apparent already how talented this band is. Keith Moon's drumming on this record is so much fun to listen to. He was definitely by far the most impressive drummer of the 60's. Pete Townshend's powerful guitar was just the beginning of what he was to offer in the years to come. John Entwistle and his ability to bring the bass guitar right into your face with Keith and Pete right beside him is more than impressive, it's explosive and deliberate. With these 3 guys being so powerful together and on their own the band HAD to have an amazing singer. They got lucky with having Roger Daltry on the same stage. Having said all that...let's talk about this release. Highlights are the instrumental "The Ox", the most famous track "My Generation" and "A Legal Matter" (I've always loved the lyrics for some reason). If you've ever enjoyed listening to the 'popular' Who tracks check this one out. It's a significant release, a look into how the band started musically and is just a good rock 'n' roll album. Highly recommended, for sure!

This is the second record by Iron Butterfly, and to be honest, the only one I have ever heard by them. I remember buying this record as a teenager in high school. With its endless, droning minor-key riff and mumbled vocals, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is easily the most recognized and celebrated song of the acid rock era. Legend has it that the song was actually titled "In the Garden of Eden" but when recording the band was so stoned lead singer Doug Ingle couldn’t pronounce the words correctly and hence it became the classic we know today. The track rambles on for a full 17 minutes which seems like an eternity. I do like the track, but must admit that I like the trimmed down version much better.
The other tracks on the record are also pretty heavy with lots of organ work in them, but I enjoyed listening to it again after all of these years. The entire record still stands as the group's definitive album, and the one that best represents them and the times it was recorded and released in.
The LP peaked at #4 on the Billboard charts and was given the distinction of being the first album to be awarded platinum status when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) began that achievement level in 1976. Today it is a multi-platinum album with sales of over 25 million copies. It was also Atlantic Records' biggest selling album until it was surpassed by Led Zeppelin IV. It is recommended.
