THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS...You're Gonna Get It  (1978)
You're Gonna Get It, the second album from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. was released 35 years ago today in 1978.  It reached number 23 on the U.S. Billboard album charts.  I highly recommend this album and give it a 3 out of 5 stars.  It was fun listening to this record.  It's a good straight-ahead rock n roll record.  Petty has that lazy-I-don't-care-attitude vocal style which, somehow in his case, works very well.  The Heartbreakers are an excellent band, as this album shows.  "Magnolia" was the highlight for me, as well as "I Need To Know" and "Hurt."  The only track I didn't care for was the title track "You're Gonna Get It." Definitely check this album out

KISS...Lick It Up  (1983)
Lick It Up was released 30 years ago in 1983 and reached number 24 on the U.S. Billboard album charts.  I'll give it a 4 out of 5 stars.  With the exception of the horrendous track "Gimme More" this is a rockin' album.  It has 2 exceptional tracks "Young And Wasted" and "A Million To One".  Another highlight is "Not For The Innocent." I definitely recommend it

A very nice listen. Any of these tracks could have been on a Fleetwood Mac record, but it's nice to hear a full album of just Christine. Nice, simple pop tunes that make for an enjoyable listen. Highlights include "Love Will Show Us How" and "Got a Hold On Me". Definitely recommended

The ALBUM OF THE DAY
THE ROLLING STONES...England's Newest Hit Makers (1964)

Wow, I bet 1964 was a magnificent year to be alive (I was born in '64 so I don't know) because first it was The Beatles, and then here came the Rolling Stones. This is the first U.S. release of the Stones and it reached number 11 on the U.S. Billboard charts. There are 3 reasons that this record is worth checking out. First: it's historical significance. This is the beginning, the original band who are just barely men. Second: look at the cover. Here are the Stones at the youngest we ever knew them. Bill Wyman (center) looks like he's ready to hurt someone, thus the beginning of their bad boy image that follows them today. Third: the music. It's raw, energetic, youthful! It's rock 'n roll, it's the blues, it's the 60's. There is only 1 track ("Tell Me") included here that Mick Jaggr and Keith Richard penned. The rest are all covers of their musical heroes, with highlights including "Not Fade Away" (originally Buddy Holly), "I Just Want To Make Love To You" (originally Willie Dixon) and "I'm A King Bee' (originally Slim Harpo). The boys would in years to come write and record some of the greatest songs in rock history. That's why it would be important to check out the beginnings and the roots of the Rolling Stones. This album is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

If you like hard rock/heavy metal you should check out this album. This is a fun album, and it rocks...totally. I love how it starts off with an instrumental track called 'Remnants' which then segues into the title track 'Asylum'. Other highlights: 'Another Way To Die' and 'The Infection'. I recommend it for all hard rock/heavy metal lovers.

The Queen Of Soul – Aretha Franklin. What a fantastic, soulful record. The inclusion of "Respect" which is her best know work and one of the greatest singles in pop music history, is enough to warrant a listen to “I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You” and give the record classic status, but this Aretha's Atlantic label debut is just a great piece of work from start to finish. With a fantastic Muscle Shoals backing band and great material to work with this record catapulted Aretha to the Queen of Soul. Granted, I haven’t heard a lot of her works – but this is easily the strongest record of her career with great vocal performances from her. There is of course “Respect” and the title track which is the records other best-known song, but there is much more here than that. A great cover of Ray Charles' "Drown in My Own Tears" and two covers of Sam Cooke - "Good Times" and "A Change Is Gonna Come" are as good as the originals. Truly a soul classic record.
"Respect" is one of several songs considered to have defined the 1960s. It has appeared in dozens of films, and still receives consistent play on oldies radio stations. In the 1970s, Franklin's version of the song came to exemplify the feminist movement. Although she had numerous hits after "Respect", and several before its release, the song has became Franklin's signature song and her best-known recording. This album was ranked eighty-third in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time in 2002. Two years later, "Respect" was fifth in the magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time. The song "Respect" is part of the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list. It is highly recommended.
