THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION... 2 (2011)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)
Just when you thought the genre of blues rock had been exhausted and could ever be ignited again, along comes this vibrant and refreshing album. And from a bunch of old and experienced music hands. All musicians excel on this album and have grown into an extremely tight unit. Jason Bonham is brilliant on the drums, Joe Bonamassa is a genius. Glenn Hughes is singing and playing bass as well as ever. A must have for all those rockers out there that still crave for the days of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and something new. THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
RUSH...Time Machine 2011: Live In Cleveland (2011)
(CD, Allmusic review)
All those fabulous familiar tracks from Rush LIVE. All of the live albums released by Rush are great listening experiences. The only drawback to this album is Geddy Lee's vocals as he doesn't have the range he used to have (most of the older rockers don't) but he's Geddy Lee, he can be easily forgiven. Another great live listening experience

Top 10 Rock Albums Of 2011

It's that time of year again where everyone who thinks their opinions matters to everyone else produces their year-end Top 10 list. Well, we also think our opinion matters so here is Barr's Music 101s' Top 10 list of the best albums of 2011:

10. JOHN WAITE...Rough And Tumble
When a record has one of the best classic rock tracks of the last ten years (Rough and Tumble), one of the best power ballads since the eighties (If You Ever Get Lonely) and one AC hit written all over (Evil) this mean that this is a winner!

9. PAUL SIMON...Songwriter
Paul Simon has written some of the most memorable songs in his lifetime, both as a member of Simon And Garfunkel and as a solo artist. This is quite an impressive setlist here and Simon's acoustic guitar playing is remarkable. A very nice listen

8. WARREN HAYNES...Man In Motion
Perhaps the hardest working American songwriter/guitarist Warren Haynes bringing forward a great sounding rhythmn and blues solo project collection of original songs with an interesting group of hand picked players behind him. The album was recorded live in studio to capture all of the emotion, passion and spontaneity on two-inch tape with vintage tube microphones. Simply fantastic.

7. JOE BONAMASSA...Dust Bowl
The gritty, blues-based playing of Joe Bonamassa is in full force on this record.
Firmly rooted in the Blues, but definitely explores the outer reaches of the genre - this record showcases Joe's amazing virtuosity with his lengthy and blistering guitar solos.

6. QUEENSRYCHE...Dedicated To Chaos

If you are expecting hard rock song adter another you'll be somewhat disappointed. Looking for a record from a classic band that is experimenting and spreading their wings here's a good one for you

5. THE CARS...Move Like This
A new release from Ric Ocasek and company - their first album in 24 years. Move Like This recalls the sound The Cars are so well known for, yet at the same time, maintains significant relevance to the music of today. Will appeal to all long-standing Cars fans and open the door to a whole new generation of listeners.

4. JIMI HENDRIX...Winterland
We were reluctant to put this on the list as 1. it isn't anything newly recorded, obviously, and 2. most of this material has been released before on previous releases. Another great live listening experience

2. ROBBIE ROBERTSON...How To Become Clairvoyant
Can a 67 year old rocker still make music that moves you? The answer is a resounding affirmative. This record is a masterpiece from a master musician made with the help of many others, most effectively with Eric Clapton writing, playing and singing on several tracks. It took 10 years between records, but it was well worth the wait.

1. BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION... 2
Just when you thought the genre of blues rock had been exhausted and could ever be ignited again, along comes this vibrant and refreshing album. And from a bunch of old and experienced music hands. THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
BLIND MELON...Blind Melon (1992)
(CD, Allmusic review)
We all have those albums that we bought because the hit single was a fantastic song, but then got the album home and the rest of it is mediocre. That was the case with the debut CD from Blind Melon. It's not a horrible album by no means. It's actually pretty good but none of the songs come close to being as cool as "No Rain". Another highlight is "Tones Of Home". Check it out, it's not bad.

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die #172. The Stooges - The Stooges (1969)

172. The Stooges - The Stooges (1969)

Label – Elektra
Producer – John Cale
Art Direction – William S. Harvey
Nationality –USA
Running Time – 34:33

Track Listing (standout tracks listed in bold)

Side A
969" – 4:05
"I Wanna Be Your Dog" – 3:09
"We Will Fall" – 10:18

Side B
"No Fun" – 5:14
"Real Cool Time" – 2:29
"Ann" – 2:59
"Not Right" – 2:51
"Little Doll" – 3:20

What a fun record. Never taking themselves too seriously, the Stooges unleashed this record on the world in August of 1969, and I’m sure listeners were wondering – what the hell is this!! The ragged fury of the guitar runs, the brutal drum pounding and the fierce solid bass thumps anchor the record allowing front man Iggy Pop to lay his vocals on the listener in a in your face manor from start to finish.
One this is for sure – you either like the Stooges – or you don’t! . The record is widely considered as one of the best punk albums of all time, and I would agree with that assessment.
The record peaked at number 106 on the Billboard album charts. Two songs, "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "1969", were released as singles. In 2003, the album was ranked number 185 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The same magazine included "1969" in their "100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time" list.
In March 2005, Q magazine placed "I Wanna Be Your Dog" at number 13 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.
It is highly recommended.

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die #171. Scott Walker - Scott 4 (1969)

171. Scott Walker - Scott 4 (1969)

Label – Philips
Producer – John Franz
Art Direction – John Constable
Nationality –USA
Running Time – 32:26

Track Listing (standout tracks listed in bold)

Side one
1. "The Seventh Seal" 4:58
2. "On Your Own Again" 1:48
3. "The World's Strongest Man" 2:21
4. "Angels of Ashes" 4:22
5. "Boy Child" 3:38

Side two
1. "Hero of the War" 2:29
2. "The Old Man's Back Again (Dedicated to the Neo-Stalinist Regime)" 3:43
3. "Duchess" 2:51
4. "Get Behind Me" 3:14
5. "Rhymes of Goodbye" 3:04

“Scott 4” is actually Scott Walker's fifth solo album, and is the second one reviewed in the “1001” records. While I enjoyed the first record by him, this one just never did catch fire and I felt I was listening to a bad Tom Jones record. The things I liked about his other record are all missing here. The over the top production is gone in favor of a stripped-down approach. The great cover versions of Jacques Brel songs are gone replaced by all original material which frankly just isn’t that good.
The one standout track "The Seventh Seal" – is based upon the classic film by Ingmar Bergman and is easily the finest track on the record.
The record failed to chart, and I can easily see why. The main question is why was this selected as one of the 1001 Records?? It is not recommended.

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die #170. Fairport Convention - Liege & Lief (1969)

170. Fairport Convention - Liege & Lief (1969)

Label – Island
Producer – Joe Boyd
Art Direction – R. Nicol; Fairpoint
Nationality – UK
Running Time – 41:01

Track Listing (standout tracks listed in bold)

Side one

"Come All Ye" (Sandy Denny, Ashley Hutchings) - 4:55
"Reynardine" (traditional, arranged by Fairport) - 4:33
"Matty Groves" (trad., arr. Fairport) - 8:08
"Farewell, Farewell"[14] (Richard Thompson) - 2:38

Side two

"The Deserter" (trad., arr. Fairport) - 4:10
Medley (trad., arr. Dave Swarbrick) - 4:00
"The Lark in the Morning"
"Rakish Paddy"
"Foxhunters' Jig"
"Toss the Feathers"
"Tam Lin" (trad., arr. Swarbrick) - 7:20
"Crazy Man Michael" (Thompson, Swarbrick) - 4:35

Second Fairport Convention record reviewed – and the other one was just 7 reviews ago – and their fourth overall release. This record is considered to be THE definitive British folk-rock album. Again – I am not a big fan of folk music, and while pleasant enough, this record did not do much for me. I will say that I did like it better than “Unhalfbricking” however.
Sandy Denny’s vocals are very strong on this record and she is singing with great confidence which to me really makes the record as good as it is.
It was interesting to learn that the record was recorded shortly after a tour bus crash claimed the lives of original Fairport drummer Martin Lamble and Richard Thompson's girlfriend. Maybe that’s why all but 2 of the tracks are covers versus original compositions.
The record was moderately successful, peaking at number 17 on the British charts. In an audience vote at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2006, the album was voted Most Influential Folk Album of All Time. It is recommended with caution.

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die #169. Leonard Cohen - Songs From A Room (1969

169. Leonard Cohen - Songs From A Room (1969)

Label - Columbia
Producer - Bob Johnson
Art Direction - Uncredited
Nationality - Canada
Running Time - 33:51

Track Listing (standout tracks listed in bold)

Side one
"Bird on the Wire" – 3:28
"Story of Isaac" – 3:38
"A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes" – 3:18
"The Partisan" – 3:29
"Seems So Long Ago, Nancy" – 3:41
Side two
"The Old Revolution" – 4:50
"The Butcher" – 3:22
"You Know Who I Am" – 3:32
"Lady Midnight" – 3:01
"Tonight Will Be Fine" – 3:53

This is Leonard Cohen's second album – and second one reviewed for the 1001 albums. This record to me was a lot like the first one to me. I didn’t NOT like it, but his “vocals” have a lot to be desired. His song writing – or perhaps more fitting would be to call it his “poem writings set to music” are mostly fine, and really are the only reason to give this record a listen. Better yet – just get the lyric sheet and enjoy that – as it would be much better than the “songs” themselves.
The production is also kinda odd at times full of accent’s that just seem randomly thrown in. (Perhaps that IS the desired effect – I’m not too sure!). There is a harp that splashes into several tracks – kinda jolting. There is some interesting uses of an organ - and then there are some synthesizer runs that too seem just random and out of place and serve no purpose to enhance the tracks.
When released in 1969 it reached #63 on the Billboard list and #2 at UK charts. It is not recommended.

THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
JOHN LENNON...The John Lennon Collection (1982)
(CD, vinyl, Allmusic review)
This being the 31st anniversary of his death The John Lennon Collection is the Album Of The Day. First, to get it out of the way, the music here is outstanding. It gathers his solo singles and his tracks from Double Fantasy, his album released in 1980 shortly before his death. This compilation plus any albums of unreleased music plus a box set of alternate takes and unreleased material is all that should have been released. This collection has been re-released under different names and different running orders (with some other tracks at times) to many times since 1982. This version of the song "Imagine" has been released officially on 10 different album packages. A bit much!! However, the music here is a good selection of his "biggies" so enjoy
