THE ALBUM OF THE DAY
JERRY GARCIA BAND...Cats Under The Stars  (1978)
Cats Under The Stars was released 35 years ago in April 1978.  It reached number 114 on the U.S. Billboard album charts. First, let me just announce I'm not a Deadhead, even though I think the Grateful Dead was a cool band.  Second, to my ears this could just be another Dead album, which is ok.  I recommend this album with 2 1/2 out of 5 stars.  "Rubin And Cherish" starts the album off and I'm really digging it, ya know, but then it goes on to long and the vocals become irritating.  But then the next 2 tracks, "Love In The Afternoon" and "Palm Sunday," are both great tracks.  "Palm Sunday" is a little short but had it been longer it might have been like "Rubin And Cherish."  Garcia's guitar solo in the title track "Cats Under The Stars" was pretty impressive. Side 2 starts off with an excellent rocker "Rhapsody In Red."  It jams!  Then the next track "Rain" turns out to be a major disappointing follow up to "Rhapsody In Red" with some vocals by Donna Jean Godchaux.  The track just went on and on, I was ready for the next one, which was the short "Down Home."  The final track on the record "Gomorrah" is a slow bluesy tune telling the story of Lot and Gomorrah.  It was pretty cool.  Overall a good listen.
